Dimethyl Carbonate (DMC) is an organic compound. It is a colourless, flammable liquid. It is classified as a carbonate ester. This compound has found use as a methylating agent and as a co-solvent in lithium-ion batteries. Dimethyl Carbonate is often considered to be a green reagent, and it is exempt from the restrictions placed on most volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the United States.
Industrial Grade Use:
-
Paints and coatings: It is used in solvent based systems, such as paint components, building components. It can also be used as a carrier solvent or dispersing medium for adhesives, pigments and colorants, as well as an effective paint thinner and multi-purpose solvent.
-
Ink: for the production of water based flexographic ink.
-
Biodiesel additive: used for the synthesis of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resin in bisphenol A polycarbonate.
-
Homes, institutions and industry: DMC provides low toxicity and rapid biodegradation properties for solvent degreasing formulations.
-
Biodiesel additives: Diesel mixed with dimethyl carbonate can improve combustion and significantly reduce material emissions.
-
Electronic Grade Use: DMC is the most promising solvent for lithium-ion battery electrolyte due to its good solvation and low viscosity characteristics. It is rapidly applied to the computer, mobile phone, hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle manufacturing market.
